Can a person put a french polish finish over z-poxy filler? Or must one use
pumice as the grain filler?

French polish over Z-poxy is fine.

Edit: I should have added, though I think we all know now, that the opposite is not true. Z-poxy does not adhere well to shellac.

Rich,

All of my guitars are FP over Z-Poxy. It works fine and I have never had a problem.

Best wishes,

Hey Max, do you sand back to all wood or leave a thin coat?

Thanks!

yes FP over Zpoxy is fine

Write this down and post it on your bench some where

Shellac over epoxy is a go!!!

Epoxy over shellac is a no-no!!!

I know! lots of info about here and keeping track is hard Just keep this in mind. Shellac will stick to darn near any thing. but epoxy can be selective.

I know a few that have success with epoxy over shellac but they tooth the shellac. As I mentioned a couple weeks ago I did some practical testing and almost in all test samples I did epoxy over shellac, it was easy to peel epoxy off of a shellac under coat, but the other way (shellac over epoxy) I had no chance of peeling the shellac off the epoxy.

Rob,

Depends on the wood. I will sand back to wood leaving the pores filled in the case of a wood that I don't wish to darken - like the Cocobolo guitar I am working on now. With most light woods, such as Cypress or Maple, I will leave a layer of Z-Poxy to add some amber coloring.
